Why a self care kit?

Anxiety is a pretty big part of my life. Over the years I’ve learned different ways to deal with it, but one of the best options I have is using my self care kit.

I think self care in general is extremely important, even if you don’t deal with anxiety! It’s so easy to get caught up in everyday life, whether your a mom, work full time, a student, etc. It’s easy to forget to take a moment for yourself. When I’m getting overwhelmed or anxious, I turn to my self care kit!

A self care kit can be made up of anything that makes you happy or makes you feel good. I personally used my 5 senses to narrow down what I wanted to have available when I need it. Otherwise, my kit would get pretty big!

Smell: For me, I love candles. In particular candles that smell like cinnamon or pumpkin…sort of a fall smell! This makes me feel cozy and at home! Another popular item is essential oils. Lavender is typically used to calm anxiety, which is a great item for your kit if you’re somewhere that you can’t light a candle. I’ve used this myself on the go!

Hear: Music is a great distraction. You can tune out the real world and listen to music that suits your mood. I also like to listen to spiritual podcasts on iHeart radio as well. These always make me feel uplifted. Spotify s lso a great music and podcast option! And with everyone having a cell phone, you will always have this with you anytime you need it!

Sight: I love reading. It always helps me escape and it allows me to take some quiet time for myself. I love that you get to sit back and read about something or someone else, and you aren’t having to worry or focus on your current situation…at least for a little while! Some of my favorite books are by Nicholas Sparks. If you haven’t heard of him, check his books out!

Taste: This sense I use the most when anxiety is creeping in. I like to keep mints, hard candies, or a pack of gum in my purse. This helps me to focus on what I’m eating, rather than what is giving me stress. I would say your favorite food would be a good option, but candies and gum are typically easy to carry all the time, where pizza isn’t! 😀

Touch: I love a good warm, soft blanket. There’s nothing more comforting to me than a soft blanket keeping me warm. I personally love Sherpa blankets. They are pretty cheap and you can get them anywhere!

The last step of a self care kit is to have a special place for it. That way it’s easy to find what you need, right when you need it! I like to take some of my items along with me in my purse, so I use a little makeup bag for my gum, candies, essential oil, and headphones.

Do you already have your own self care kit? I’d love to hear what’s in yours!! Let me know in the comments!

  1. Self-care is so important. The senses was a nice touch! Also, CANDLES FOREVER! I love having a day of self-care for myself. Usually I’ll do face/hair masks, paint my nails, and just do a general at-home spa day for myself.

  2. Love the ideas! Essential oils are my faves. Thanks for sharing ♥️ ♥️ By any chance you are interested on doing collaborations, you can check out the collaborations portal of Phlanx.com and connect with amazing brands!

  3. I especially love that you have a “kit” and many of the items travel with you. I have a small ipsy bag in my purse with similar items and never realized I was doing the same thing! Such a great post.

  4. I love this!!! I’m the same when it come to using distraction techniques to overcome anxiety, and I use gum too! Reading is always a great outlet to sort if escape from everyday stressors.
    Thank You for sharing, Emily!

  5. What a great idea! I have anxiety too so I might have to make my own self care kit. I love that you used the 5 senses!
